An off-grid house with a table-like structure sitting lightly on the landscape.

Context

Located on the east coast of the Coromandel Peninsula – a black rough sawn timber box sits looking north to the sea. The dark exterior palette is complemented with a layer of sliding glass screens.

Response

This operable layer allows the moderation of light / air and protection both when occupied and alone. Internally are clad with painted timber boards that provide a warm counter to its robust exterior. The house has three bedrooms and ensuites set about a small courtyard. Care has been made to limit the scale of the building and maintain a sense of sitting in the bush.
